Before We Chat
A guide for potential guests for Surfing the Quicksand
Welcome! I’m so glad you’re considering joining me on Surfing the Quicksand. I thought it might be helpful to share a little about me and how I approach these conversations.
The Origin Story:
In September 2025, I launched my podcast, Surfing the Quicksand, for women in midlife (think: 40-60, GenX and Older Millennials) who want to get unstuck in areas like home life, career, perimenopause and menopause, women’s health beyond just the perimenopause journey, finances, caring for aging parents, parenting, and relationships.
It’s all built from my own personal and professional experience (as a professional organizer/ productivity coach, career coach/resume writer, recovering HR professional, and mid-50’s GenXer going through menopause and caring for aging parents) as a backdrop to authentic and rich conversations.
What (I Hope) Conversations with Guests Feel Like:
The podcast is a “generalist” format, where I introduce guests with their own area of expertise and lived experience across the many topics on our minds when it comes to creating stress. I also do some episodes featuring what I call “midlife leaps” – women who have made a significant professional or personal shifts during midlife.
Think of it as “girlfriends helping girlfriends get unstuck, one chat at a time.” They are a relaxed, back-and-forth conversation, not a rigid interview, designed to let listeners feel like they’re sitting at the table with us. My hope is that each of these episodes leads my audience to feel inspired and find a path of action to get unstuck in an area of life that has been weighing on their hearts and minds.
The Values I Bring to the Podcast:
I’m also sharing with people a bit about some values I bring with me to the podcast, so they have a better sense of me and what to expect:
-
Curiosity + respect are the foundation. Though we’ll meet in advance to scope our conversation, but this isn’t a scripted experience. We may wander into an unexpected topic, but if there’s something you’d rather avoid, those boundaries are welcome and respected so be sure I know what’s off limits. Even in hard or sensitive conversations, every perspective is treated with care.
-
Curiosity includes context. If you share a stat, study, or claim that’s outside ”common knowledge,” please share a source or be ready if I ask about it. (When possible, I’ll link to sources in the show notes for the conversation-critical ones). This isn’t about “gotcha” moments; it’s about giving listeners context and building trust. I’m also mindful about clearing up ”insider” jargon or technical language if that pops up.
-
We look for what connects us. We have plenty that unites us as midlife women. While some topics may have political or religious undercurrents, our focus will stay on ideas, experiences, and practical takeaways anyone can use.
-
This is just me. This podcast is currently a privately funded passion project, built because I believe deeply in the power of these conversations. I love creating space for women to share what they’ve learned, what they’ve overcome, and what they’re still figuring out. I believe that when we learn, we lead, and every conversation is an opportunity to help someone else feel a little less alone.
What Comes Next if We Decide to Record:
After our Podcast Introduction call, if we decide to move forward, you’ll get a “next steps” email from me, which will include:
1) A link to get on the calendar to record our episode and links to an intake form and a guest release.
2) Helpful information on best practices to prepare for our recording and a reminder of “The Quicksand Three” – the 3 questions I ask all my guests!
What I Hope Guests Experience:
My goal is that every guest leaves our conversation feeling heard, respected, and proud of the story they shared. I also hope you walk away with a new perspective on your own experience, because often the stories we tell casually about ourselves are the ones that can inspire someone else. And if your appearance helps you to promote something important in your life – your business, a book, a non-profit you love – I hope you feel like our work together is something you’re proud to share with your community!
